The Mt. St. Agnes Academy was located in a building known as The Mt. Washington Octagon House built circa 1855 and located on Smith Avenue in the Mt. Washington section of Baltimore. It had been built under the direction of the Rev. Elias Heiner of the German Reformed Church for The Mt. Washington Female Academy, which closed in 1861. After the Civil War, the building was purchased by The Sisters of Mercy who founded St. Agnes Academy in 1867. The school educated girls from first grade through college and boys from first to eighth grade. In 1958 the boys’ school was moved and renamed the Mt. Washington Country School for Boys. The lower grades for girls were eventually phased out and the academy became Mt. St. Agnes College, which operated until 1971 when it was merged with Loyola, and moved from the Mt. Washington campus.
