Bert and Gail Savage have identified this stylistically as the earliest known full-length work by J. Evans. The subjects are probably John and Sarah Christian of Amesbury, Massachusetts, making it the companion to the portrait of Mary Moody Christian and Edwin John Christian illustrated Expressions of Innocence and Eloquence, p. 113.
